FAQ

Answers to the most common questions that potential clients have.

How much will it cost?

Obviously, it depends on a lot of things. If you have a strict budget, let me know what it is and we can work together to come up with a project that'll work within that budget. Or download the client form (above), fill it out, and I'll give you an estimate on your project.

How long will the project take?

Small projects can often be done in a month, while larger projects can take from 3 to 6 months. It depends on the scope of the project and the number of revisions that are necessary during development. If you're on a tight schedule and are committed to moving quickly, let me know. I can usually give you a rough estimate based on the information provided in the client form.

What does a typical project look like?

Every project is different, but I will typically guide a client through the following steps:

  1. Organize, audit, and redistribute your old content.
  2. Create strategies and standards to help you create new content.
  3. Develop a visual design that supports and fits your content organization.
  4. Use well-formed code to program your content-based design into XHMTL, CSS, and Javascript.
  5. If necessary, develop dynamic applications in PHP (ie Content Management System, Shopping Cart, Calendar, etc.)

What's a 'CMS' and do I need one?

A Content Management System allows non-technical users to update their sites with ease. Images can be uploaded, graphics can be changed, and text can be added, edited, and deleted. Most people need a CMS, but not everyone can afford to commission one. A site can be built without a CMS and have a CMS added later, so let me know what your constraints are and we'll come up with the best plan for your project.

Should my project use Wordpress? I heard it was just for blogs.

To be fair to Wordpress, it's not just for blogs. I've developed several sites in Wordpress, customizing the template completely and building custom plugins and modules for the client. It can serve as a nice CMS in many circumstances. The downside, however, is that you need to do a lot of customization to make it your own, and to make it do what you need. There comes a point in that process where it will be more effective to build a CMS from scratch. I'll make a suggestion about this after looking at your client form.

Are you available for weekday meetings?

No. My work schedule keeps me from having weekday meetings. I meet with clients on evenings and weekends. Most clients are able to accommodate these meetings.
